www.E-Geniuses.com Hard Drive Data Recovery Here are the 3 basic types of hard drive “crashes” and how to recover data in these scenarios. 1) File structure is incorrect (usually caused by improper shutdown or disconnecting the drive while it is being written to. Usual fix involves running a scandisk or chkdsk. Scan can take a few hours at most depending on the settings. 2) Unreadable data caused by bits being de-magnetized. Can be resolved by running programs which “re-magnetize” the bits. This is common on laptops that get jarred or dropped mildly. Bad sectors that aren’t physically damaged can be recovered. Software used: HDD Regenerator or SpinRite. Scans can take days. 3) Hardware failure. Sometimes the disk/platter gets scratched, the arm stops working (head crash), or the on-board chip gets fried. All of these repairs require a specialty recovery service. Anytime the hard drive needs to be opened, a clean room (dust-free room) is required. Time to recover data depends on the company. Turn around times is a few weeks. I would recommend Gillware data recovery. They have very good customer service, always pick up the phone, and quick to respond. They get the job done and don’t charge unless they recover the data you want. They are also the least expensive service that I’ve found on the internet. See for yourself. Check out their website: www.gillware.com. Give them my affiliate code (12054) if you want the following benefits -Free diagnostics -Up to 5 free DVDs or CDs …

Question by Ezme: Can Citadel Remote Backup encrypt a local drive and backup remote?
I don’t want to wait to restore non catastrophe files, so if I can also backup to a local external harddrive AND keep it encrypted. I know there a lot of products that can’t do that at all. I looked at something a year or so ago, but you needed to purchase a ,000 box with the key that sits next to the machine. So either way, it’s a huge pain, I heard that Citadel Remote Backup can, thanks.
Best answer:
Answer by Sarah
YES, it can use and external hard drive, and NO, there is no appliance that you’re forced to use.
During a restore it can look to the local drive, so you won’t be waiting hours to move data across the wire.
It’s a good product, I used it at my last job. God luck with them, it’s a good group.

What’s the best External HD someone would recommend to backup my PS3?
Best answer:
Answer by Austin
Anything really. I would get one that is bus powered, meaning you will not need to pug it into a wall, as well as the PS3. The drive will need to be formatted to FAT 32, not NTFS, but most drives come like this.
Amazon.com has some amazing drives cheep, and will ship for free!
PS
Make sure to get one that it at least the size of the HD in your PS3, if not bigger!

How can I backup my entire hard drive?
By · CommentsQuestion by michaelbass@ameritech.net: How can I backup my entire hard drive?
I need to completely backup my hard drive, system files and everything. All of the backup programs I have found don’t have an option to backup *everything* on the hard drive. Just data files and the such. Are there any programs that will back up everything without excluding even one file on my hard drive?
Oh yeah, it would be great if it is a free program too.

If you are using XP, most of the time just backing up your profile is sufficient. Go to “My Computer > C > Documents and Settings” and copy your profile folder to an external Hard Drive. If you have multiple users, copy all profile folders except for “All Users” and “Default User” folders. Your profile folder contains everything in your “My Documents” folder and your desktop, along with Firefox/IE, Thunderbird preferences. If you have files scattered about your drive, back those up too (duh). You do not need to back up your Program Files folder or Windows folder because new folders will take it’s place when you upgrade (assuming you’re doing a clean install which you always should). Programs cannot be transferred to a new OS (or anywhere for that matter, it’s possible, but it never works well. just install them again). When you try to copy your profile while you are logged in, you will prob get Access Denied errors. You can use a free data transfer program from the web. I like “Karen’s Replicator”. Lots of options and it ignores user permissions.
